Perhaps when Rooney was the most expensive teenager in football, or when he was ripping up an International tournament as a teenager, or when he was helping his team win the Champions League, or when winning his 100th cap, or when he eventually scores his 50th goal for England, in the most popular sport, do you think he'll be in the running?

Re: Sports personality
I don't mind him. Apart from the fact that he played for the yids. And apart from being Welsh. And apart from looking like a chimp.

Re: Sports personality
I quite like him as well, never photographed falling out of nightclubs at 2am and has a decent attitude.

Re: Sports personality
By rights, I should hate him.
But I can't.

Seems a thoroughly ordinary & decent young man

Re: Sports personality
Bale's the most expensive player in the world in one of the most popular sports in the world and he scored an amazing goal to win the Copa Del Rey. He also scored a goal to help his team win the Champions League Final. This is as well as having a great season in the league too.

Not exactly shoddy.

El Scorchio 1:33 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Jonny had a better shout than Bale at being on the shortlist. Not really sure why he was nominated.

Why is every bloody thing in Glasgow this year.

Were we trying to suck up to the Scots to prevent them voting YES?

Iron Duke 9:59 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Jonny should have been nominated for the main prize, never mind the lifetime achievement award.

Brussels Sprout 9:50 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Agree with griffin's comments on Jonny. Should have been better recognised in the programme. True legend who deserves the lifetime achievement award next time round.

He also captained his club side to an unprecedented league and European cup double and so should really have been among the nominees.

Sven Roeder 9:42 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Didn't watch but am also surprised Wilkinson was overlooked.
I guess Hoy ( who is equally deserved) was honoured because it was in Glasgow and Wilkinson will be next year.
Or maybe given the main winner was a Monaco resident an award for Jonny might have made the whole thing TOO FRENCH.

stewie griffin 9:36 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Oh for sure, he'll get that, sooner rather than later I hope.

But when I look through the candidates this year, not sure how he didn't figure, considering he won everything available to him to win, and yet again did it with a grace & humility beyond most on that stage last night.

El Scorchio 9:26 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
I reckon Jonny's a shoe in for that lifetime award Chris Hoy got this year at some point. Deservedly so as well. What a career.

Re: Sports personality
Giving a 5 second nod (and no nomination in a weak year) to the career of Jonny WILKINSON was pretty shit. Awful in fact. Still, with all the frantic box ticking going on, there probably wasn't time to reflect on one of our greatest ever sportsmen.

JohnnyL 9:14 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
Actually what is different about his accent?

Saul Bollox 2:09 Mon Dec 15
Re: Sports personality
i just watched his acceptance speech and I didn't think there was a trace of septic in his accent.

Re: Sports personality
The right man won simple as that, as for personality most sports people at the top of their game have the persona of a rock that is the truth. If you want a sportsman with personality then you avoid Messi Ronaldo Mcilroy Hamilton Phill Taylor and such and you go for Phill Tuffnell or well i cant think of any personality filled sportsmen Dennis Taylor maybe.

"Incidentally no British lady has got to within half a second of Sally Gunnall's 400 metres hurdles record even after 21 years"

Off the top of my head up & I'm sure there are more, until this year you could have said the same about Kathy Cook in the 100 & 200m & or indeed Seb Coe as far as the 800m goes.

No Briton has even got within a second of his time & even when they did that was Cram the best part of 30 years ago.
